It is natural that such an ancient country as Georgia has many legends to tell. Almost all historical facts of this country and places to visit are connected with legends. On this tour we visit the places connected with famous legends of Jason, Golden Fleece and Prometheus.
Jason and the Argonauts One of the most fascinating stories of ancient Greek mythology is the story of the Argonauts and the Quest for the Golden Fleece. The story takes place in the era before the Trojan War, when Hercules and Theseus were alive and active in ancient Greece. Jason was the son of Aeson, descendant of god Aeolus, and rightful heir of the throne of Iolcus. His wife would later on be the famous sorceress Medea (a renowned healer from whom the word medicine comes), daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis – where the Golden Fleece resided. The story of the Odyssey describes Georgians as a rival civilization of great technological prowess and fantastic wealth.
Prometheus In mythology the Caucasus (commonly believed to be Mt Kazbek) was the prison of Prometheus. He and his family had defied the edicts of Jupiter who then ordered Vulcan to create from clay the woman Pandora - the first female that ever lived - and sent her under the protection of Mercury to Prometheus as a temptation to become his wife and bearing a beautiful box full of presents. But Prometheus Sensed the deceit; his brother Epimetheus married her and when he opened the box a multitude of evils issued from it all over the world. Now extremely irritated, Jupiter dispatched VuIcan to carry off Prometheus to the Caucasus, where he was tied to a rock so that a vulture could feed upon his liver, which was never diminished, though Continually devoured. He was delivered from this confinement afterwards by Hercules who killed the bird of prey. Amirani is the name of a hero in Georgian Epic who resembles the Classical Prometheus.
